Solutions to counter food deserts
Building on its successful experience in implementing the food desert mitigation project in the Centre-du-Québec region, Bivizio played a key role by leveraging its technological platform to accurately map and analyze vulnerable areas. Through a participatory approach and rigorous data collection, Bivizio helped better understand the challenges of food access in the region and contributed to developing concrete solutions to improve access to healthy food. This project demonstrated the effectiveness of the Bivizio platform in analyzing and diagnosing food insecurity issues, paving the way for its expansion across Canada to combat food deserts on a national scale.
The pan-Canadian project to fight food deserts is inspired by the model developed in the Centre-du-Québec, where the Bivizio platform was used to map and analyze at-risk areas. The primary goal is to extend this approach nationwide to identify, analyze, and solve food insecurity problems in vulnerable regions across Canada.
The project is carried out in several phases:
Mapping: Using geospatial data to identify food desert areas across Canada.
Socio-economic analysis: Studying factors that influence access to food, such as poverty, transport infrastructure, and the availability of services.
Development of local solutions: Creating mobile food markets, urban agriculture projects, and food recovery programs to improve physical and economic access to food.
Monitoring and evaluation: Measuring the impact of initiatives on improving food access and the health of affected populations.
The project emphasizes collaboration with governments, municipalities, local producers, and NGOs. It aims to strengthen local infrastructure, integrate technology (via Bivizio), and promote participatory governance to ensure sustainable food access nationwide.
Invitation to collaborate:
We invite all interested stakeholders to join this initiative to contribute to the fight against food insecurity across Canada. Whether you are a government institution, municipality, local producer, or community organization, your expertise and commitment are essential in building a more equitable and sustainable food network. Together, we can turn this vision into reality and ensure access to healthy food for all Canadians.
